Akhtala monastery
With it’s dramatic setting on the edge of a cliff, the Akhtala monastery is first up along the M6. Take a right over the river in the town of Akhtala. The church served as a fortress in defending the north-western regions of Armenia and it is one of the best preserved in the country.
Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries
Take the H25 to visit the Haghpat monastery and while in town, take the small hike to the small Kusanats Church.
Follow the H25 to get back on the M6. Shortly after you will reach the Sanahin Monastery, which is also a Unesco heritage site. It’s a short way-and-back detour from the main road.
Arevatsag Gorge
In Sanahin, take the H35 up the hill. You’ll pass the villages of Odsoen and Arevatsag. From there, take the bumpy road passing the canyon. The Arevatsag Gorge is a good place for some exploring and photos, also popular for hiking or mountain biking. Continue on the semi paved road and eventually you’ll be reunited with M6.

After Arevatsag you can choose to take a detour via the H23, which takes you higher over the Pushkin pass, where the landscape is more open and you’ll pass over green and brown hills. The M6 passes through a pine forest before arriving in Vanadzor, a medium sized town with a wide range of accomodation available.
In june 2024 a section of 31 kilometers of the M6 between Alaverdi and Vanadzor was flooded. Bridges were destroyed and the main border crossing was temporarily closed.

The North Caucasus remains a high risk area. Although the Eastern provinces Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan are officially no longer war zones, they’re not considered safe for tourism.

Iran
Iran visa and border crossings
Iran remains volatile although foreign tourists are allowed to (and do) enter.
For overland vehicles, a Carnet de Passage is required (category 1, also valid in India and Pakistan. € 3.000 deposit for motorbikes up to € 7.500 value, € 5.000 deposit for other vehicles up to € 7.500 value). Overlanders staying more than 10 days need to obtain a temporary registration plate at the border (according to the Embassy of Iran in the Netherlands).
Tourist visa application takes about 10 days and visitors must enter Iran within 3 months of the date of issue. A visa is usually valid for 30 days and can be extended twice, so the total stay may be up to 90 days. The cost of a tourist visa is € 50 for Dutch nationals (2024). Proof of valid travel insurance must be attached to the visa application, according to the embassy in the Netherlands, but this isn’t mentioned on the IR-Iran eVisa application website.
Border crossings
From Iran into Pakistan, the Gabd-Reemdan border has had foreigners crossing in 2022, and 2023. But not everyone has succeeded. Both the Mirjaveh-Taftan border and the Gabd-Reemdan border have police escorts on the Pakistani side, until you’re out of Bulchistan. The Mand-Pishin crossing is only open for pedestrians. The Mirjaveh-Taftan border seems the most used, and an elaborate story from 2017 was posted by Josephine and David on Home Is Where The Car Is. Some usefull tips from this report:
- Go on a monday or a friday, so you won’t get stuck in Quetta for the weekend. The office closes early on friday.
- Exchange money in Iran as the rate at the border is terrible.
- Leave early so you don’t have to sleep at the border.
- If you stay in a hotel in Zahedan, you will get an escort from there (in 2017 at least). Be sure not to stay there if you don’t want an escort on the Iranian side, as it will be quicker.
Entering Iran from Armenia, the Nordooz-Agarak has had many foreigners crossing without issues in 2022 and 2023.

Scenic roads and high lights Armenia
Along the M6 in Lori province
From the Northernmost border crossing (Bagratshen – Sadakhlo) follow the M6 which is the main road but still a two lane road along the river with mountain views on both sides. It has many local roads running stretches alongside it if you want a detour.
Akhtala monastery
With it’s dramatic setting on the edge of a cliff, the Akhtala monastery is first up along the M6. Take a right over the river in the town of Akhtala. The church served as a fortress in defending the north-western regions of Armenia and it is one of the best preserved in the country.
Haghpat and Sanahin monasteries
Take the H25 to visit the Haghpat monastery and while in town, take the small hike to the small Kusanats Church.
Follow the H25 to get back on the M6. Shortly after you will reach the Sanahin Monastery, which is also a Unesco heritage site. It’s a short way-and-back detour from the main road.
Arevatsag Gorge
In Sanahin, take the H35 up the hill. You’ll pass the villages of Odsoen and Arevatsag. From there, take the bumpy road passing the canyon. The Arevatsag Gorge is a good place for some exploring and photos, also popular for hiking or mountain biking. Continue on the semi paved road and eventually you’ll be reunited with M6.
Arevatsag to Vanadzor
After Arevatsag you can choose to take a detour via the H23, which takes you higher over the Pushkin pass, where the landscape is more open and you’ll pass over green and brown hills. The M6 passes through a pine forest before arriving in Vanadzor, a medium sized town with a wide range of accomodation available.
In june 2024 a section of 31 kilometers of the M6 between Alaverdi and Vanadzor was flooded. Bridges were destroyed and the main border crossing was temporarily closed.
Armenia visa and border crossings
No visa is needed for European citizens and no Carnet de Passage either. However you need to purchase a temporary liability insurance to temporarily import your vehicle. There are several places where you can buy them at the border, but don’t use the first booth and avoid touts. There is an insurance company in Erevan, Ingo, that askes 0,0061% to 3,3% (of the bikes value?) for a third party insurance. Another option is to arrange it beforehand via ASWA.
Border crossings
Only the border crossings with Iran and Georgia are open for foreigners. To go from Armenia into Iran, see the border crossings into Iran. There are three border crossings from Georgia into Armenia:
- Bagratashen – Sadakhlo on the main road between Erevan and Tbilisi.
- Gogovan – Guguti which is partly a dirt road and quite scenic, according to Caravanistan.
- Bavra – Ninotsminda
- Privolnoe – Akhkerpi the smalles and least used border crossing. It exists, but is nowhere to be found on any travel online travel resource.

Myanmar
India – Myanmar border crossing
Moreh/Tamu
In western Sagaing Division is the border crossing between Moreh (India, Manipur state) and Tamu (Myanmar, Sagaing Division). The small town of Tamu serves primarily as a transport and logistics hub for cross border trade between India and Myanmar. There is also an ATM, a variety of restaurants, and several hotels that accept foreginers.
Zokhawtar/Rikhawdar
The Myanmar government opened the Zokhawthar (India, Mizoram state) and Rikhawdar (Myanmar, Chin State) border crossing to increase the trade flow to remote northwestern Chin State. That being said, this mountainous region offers incredible scenery, rugged roads, and a unique cultural experience. Just outside of Rikhawdar village is the heart-shaped Rih Lake.
It is not permitted for foreigners to cross at any other India-Myanmar border points.
